Dr. Herbert E. " Herb" Thomson M.D.
Dec.
15, 1925-Apr. 2, 2006. " Dr. Herb," as he was known to friends,
parents and children alike, practiced pediatrics in Colorado Springs
for 41 year before retiring in December 1997. He and his wife, Jean,
maintained a residence in Colorado Springs. Dr. Herb died at Pikes Peak
Hospice on April 2, 2006, at the age of 80. Dr. Thomson was born in
Cavalier, ND, on December 15, 1925, the second of twin boys, to District
Judge and Mrs. Harold P. Thomson. He is preceded in death by his parents,
older brother Harold, and twin brother Neil, who was also a Pediatrician.
He is survived by his wife of 52+ years, Jean Waind Thomson; daughters:
Barbie (George) Hess of Colorado Springs and Heather (Kris) Burghart
of Parker, CO; son, Brian Thomson (Kristi) of Albuquerque,
NM., and five grandchildren: Chris (Jessica) and Mike Hess, and Taylor,
Chase, and Logan Thomson. Dr. Thomson served in the Marine Corps during
WWII. He
received his M.D. degree from Marquette University, served his internship
at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, AZ., and his pediatric residency
at the Children's Hospital in Denver, CO. During his long tenure as
a practicing Pediatrician, he experienced several instances of 3rd generation
patients - real family medicine! Dr. Herb was the old-fashioned type
of doctor who made house calls day and night. His love of children was
well demonstrated during his protracted practice. He always enjoyed
singing to his small patients while examining them. During his years
of practice, he served on the boards of the Colorado Springs School,
Ruth Washburn Nursery School, Nutrition Camp, and Colorado Springs Day
Nursery. He was a member of the AMA, Colorado Medical Association, El
Paso County Medical Association, and the Academy of Pediatrics. He was
on the active staff of Penrose Hospital and Memorial Hospital, serving
as Chief of Staff at Penrose. He was a past member of the Cheyenne Mountain
Country Club, the Broadmoor Golf Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce, and
Rotary Club. He was an active member of the Broadmoor Community Church.
Music was always a big part of Dr. Herb's life, being born into a musical
family. Upon arriving in Colorado Springs, he became interested in Barbershop
Quartet singing and remained an active performer on various quartets
until his demise, usually teamed up with his dear friend, Pete Tyree.
Among other quartets, he sang with the Hi Chords (1972 District Champions),
Rockies IV (1993 International Seniors Champions), and recently Still
Vertical. A celebration of Dr. Herb's life will be held Saturday, April
8th, at 1:00 pm at Broadmoor Community Church, 315 Lake Avenue, Colorado
Springs, CO. Memorial gifts in Dr. Herb's honor may be made to the following
